Check-in

  • Received: 2026-05-25 20:09 MDT
  • Event type: Unprompted self-check-in
  • Message assessment: Health or risk flag: multi-day SI/back flare with stiffness, radiating leg pain, mid-back spread, and shortened rides from pain; current-day improvement reported but symptoms remain decision-critical.
Message from Sidney:
My back has been hurting a lot since Wednesday with it being extra bad Friday to today. My SI joint is flaring up with pain and stiffness and shooting pain down my leg. On some rides over the weekend the pain was expanding across my mid back and the pain was so much I had to keep my rides shorter (2 hours or less) today was the first day I’ve been able to ride without high levels of pain or ongoing shooting pain

Interpretation

This is a material health and training-impact signal, not routine soreness. Radiating leg pain and SI-region stiffness require the next 24-72 hours to be treated as symptom-led. Threshold, low-cadence torque, and loaded lower-body strength are not appropriate unless symptoms remain clearly settled. Specialist review requested from recovery, endurance, and strength before final athlete-facing instruction.

Follow-up ride report

  • Received: 2026-05-25 20:13 MDT
  • Event type: Follow-up to same back/SI check-in
  • Message assessment: Confirms today's ride was modified by symptoms: 2 hours endurance while actively managing the back, not the planned threshold-style work.
Message from Sidney:
Today I did 2 hrs endurance while trying to keep the back in check

Updated interpretation

Today's 2-hour endurance ride confirms the original May 25 training objective was already altered by the flare. The next decision is not to resume the planned build immediately, but to protect the first improving day and use May 26 as a symptom-check ride only. Calendar files for May 26 and May 27, plus the rolling 7-day schedule, were updated to remove Tuesday threshold, Wednesday torque, and loaded lower-body strength.

Endurance

Recovery

Strength

Nutrition

Status

Review target: 2026-05-24. Evidence is incomplete because the canonical daily log for May 24 is missing and no standalone nutrition plan file was available for that date. The calendar shows a low-load recovery spin plus short movement reset after the first long ride of the rebuild, so nutrition did not need to be aggressive, but it did need to restore. With no confirmed recovery-day meals, fluids, or protein support recorded, the day reads as unverified rather than properly absorbed, which is a poor setup for today's threshold work and an unnecessary durability risk with Hashimoto's in the background.

Observations

  • No canonical daily log exists for 2026-05-24, so there are no confirmed intake totals, hydration notes, or completion notes for the planned recovery spin and reset session.
  • The May 24 calendar called for a true absorption day after May 23's first long endurance ride of the rebuild. Even on a low-intensity day, carbohydrate repletion, protein distribution, and fluids still mattered because today's threshold session was next.
  • Continuity into the day was already weak: the May 23 evening pass reported no visible current-day nutrition items and no confirmed long-ride outcome, so May 24 likely started with unresolved recovery uncertainty rather than a clean reset.
  • Today's 07:16 breakfast gives a useful carbohydrate start, but at 10.5 g protein it is still more pre-session fuel than full recovery support. If yesterday ended light or unrecorded, this morning alone does not close that gap.

Recommendations

  • Treat today as a proper key-session fueling day: add a clear protein feeding in the next window and do not let the morning remain pancake-only support.
  • If the threshold ride goes ahead, use 75-90 g carbohydrate per hour on the bike and recover with carbohydrate plus 25-30 g protein within 30 minutes after finishing.
  • Build three to four clear protein feedings across today and include deliberate fluids and sodium so the missing May 24 recovery day does not turn into a two-day carry-forward deficit.
  • Tomorrow nutrition goal: arrive at the May 26 endurance/torque session having fully absorbed today's threshold work - complete dinner, finish fluids, and start tomorrow with a normal breakfast rather than another late-day catch-up.

Watch

  • Missing May 24 log data sharply reduces certainty. This review is anchored to the planned recovery-day structure, the May 23 continuity notes, and today's current-day breakfast evidence rather than a confirmed intake record.
  • Repeated under-reporting or partial underfueling across May 21-23 means an unverified recovery day on May 24 is not a neutral gap; it is a real recovery-risk signal.
  • If today's threshold session feels flat, unstable, or harder than expected, unresolved recovery-day fueling should be considered before reading that as purely fitness limitation.

Carry-forward

Review target Intake Training context Main gap Carry-forward goal
2026-05-24 Intake unverified; canonical daily log missing, no confirmed totals available Recovery spin 1:00-1:15 plus short movement-quality and trunk reset planned after the first long ride of the rebuild; completion unconfirmed No confirmed recovery-day intake, hydration, or protein support was recorded before today's threshold day Fuel May 25 like a real key session: add protein to the morning, take 75-90 g CHO/hr if riding, recover quickly after, and finish the day with a complete dinner

Portion summary Pancakes: 150 g total
Strawberries: 80 g
Maple syrup: 40 g
Banana: 120 g edible portion
Pancakes: 2 × 75 g each (150 g total, ~15 cm diameter, medium homemade)
Strawberries: 80 g (typical topping portion, roughly 4–5 medium berries)
Maple syrup: 30 mL (~40 g, a standard pour)
Banana: 120 g edible portion (one medium banana)
Two pancakes: 350 kcal, 9 g protein, 44 g carbohydrate, 15 g fat

Maple syrup: 105 kcal, 0 g protein, 27 g carbohydrate, 0 g fat
Banana: 105 kcal, 1 g protein, 27 g carbohydrate, 0 g fat

Assumptions The two pancakes are standard medium breakfast pancakes, not large restaurant-style pancakes
The syrup portion is about 40 g, roughly a moderate pour over both pancakes
The banana is one medium fruit with about 120 g edible portion
The strawberries are a small side serving and not mixed with added sugar or cream
Pancakes are homemade-style from a standard batter (flour, egg, milk, butter/oil), ~15 cm diameter
Strawberries are fresh, sliced as a topping, not sugared
Maple syrup is pure maple syrup, poured at a typical serving of ~30 mL
Banana is a medium-sized whole banana (~120 g edible flesh)
No additional butter or whipped cream on the pancakes

Uncertainty notes The biggest sources of uncertainty are pancake size and recipe, and how much maple syrup was actually used. If the pancakes were larger or cooked with more fat, or if substantially more syrup was added, calories and carbohydrate would be higher. Pancake size and recipe are the largest source of variance; thicker or larger pancakes with more butter could add 100–150 kcal
If butter was added on top of the pancakes (common but not stated), fat and calories would increase materially (~35–50 kcal per 5 g pat)
Maple syrup quantity could easily range from 15 mL to 60 mL depending on preference, shifting carbohydrate by ±15 g
Parser could not match the shared prompt structure

Spinach salad: 20 kcal, 2 g protein, 3 g carbohydrate, 0.5 g fat
Orange chicken in sauce: 180 g
White rice, cooked: 200 g
Spinach salad with light dressing: 75 g
Assumptions Rice portion estimated from the visible plate size and depth of rice.
Orange chicken estimated as a sauced chicken portion, likely including some oil, sugar, and starch in the sauce.
Spinach salad assumed to be a small side salad with a light dressing, since it was reported but not visible.
No additional toppings, nuts, cheese, or heavy dressing were assumed for the salad.
Orange chicken is breaded/battered and coated in a sweet orange sauce (standard preparation)
Rice portion estimated from visible spread in the bowl, consistent with roughly 190 g cooked
Spinach salad assumed to be a simple undressed side salad of ~75 g since it is not visible and no dressing was mentioned
Macro cross-check: (31 × 4) + (88 × 4) + (22 × 9) = 124 + 352 + 198 = 674 kcal, consistent with the 685 kcal estimate
Orange chicken is a battered or coated chicken preparation with a sweet orange-style sauce.
Rice portion is estimated from the visible serving.
Spinach salad is assumed to be a small side salad with a modest amount of dressing.
Macro-derived calories are approximately 818 kcal, consistent with the estimated total.
Uncertainty notes The largest uncertainty is the orange chicken preparation, especially whether it was battered or fried and how much sauce was used. The spinach salad could also change the estimate materially if it included a heavier dressing, cheese, nuts, or other toppings. If the orange chicken is takeout (e.g. Panda Express style), fat and carbohydrate could be higher due to heavier breading and more sauce; calories could reach 750–800 kcal total
The spinach salad could vary significantly if dressing or toppings (cheese, nuts, croutons) were added but not mentioned
Rice portion could range from 150–250 g cooked depending on how compacted it is under the chicken, which would shift calories by ±60 kcal
The main uncertainty is the amount of sauce, coating, oil, and dressing, as well as the unpictured spinach salad portion.

Peanut butter is a standard spread (~15 g), honey is a light drizzle (~7 g)
Trail mix was approximately one small handful and contained nuts with dried fruit
Dates totalled approximately 40 g
Toast was a small piece with a thin spread of peanut butter and honey
Calories are rounded; fibre and ingredient variation may cause some difference from the standard protein/carbohydrate/fat calorie calculation
Uncertainty notes Portion size is the main uncertainty. A larger handful of trail mix or heavier peanut butter serving could materially increase calories and fat. Macro-derived calories are broadly consistent, with some expected variation from rounding and fibre content. All portions are vaguely described ("some", "small piece") and could easily vary by 30–50% in either direction; trail mix composition varies widely depending on chocolate, seed, or dried fruit content; date variety and count are assumed Portion sizes and the composition of the trail mix could materially change the estimate, especially the amounts of nuts, peanut butter, honey, and dates consumed.

Nutrition reply - 07:21 breakfast

That is a solid carbohydrate-first breakfast.

**Breakdown:**
You got a strong carbohydrate load here, which is good setup if you are riding this morning or within the next few hours. The gap is protein. As it stands, this supports glycogen better than recovery or strength adaptation.

**Macros:**
- Energy: ~582 kcal
- Carbohydrate: ~108.5 g
- Protein: ~10.5 g
- Fat: ~12.5 g
- Fiber: ~5 g

**Feedback:**
If this is pre-ride, the carb side is good. Add a clear protein source in the next feeding window, for example eggs or a dairy-free protein shake, so the meal plus follow-up gets you closer to 25-30 g protein.

Nutrition review

Yesterday's recovery day is too incomplete to call well-supported. The May 24 log is missing, so I cannot verify what you actually ate or drank, but that is the main problem after the first long ride of the rebuild: recovery only works if you actually replace it. Going into today's threshold session with no confirmed recovery-day intake leaves too much chance that you are carrying a deficit forward.

**What went well:**
- Today's breakfast gave you a strong carbohydrate start for the morning.
- The planned May 24 load was light enough that this is still fixable if you fuel the rest of today properly.

**What needs work:**
- There is no confirmed May 24 recovery-day intake, hydration, or protein support in the log.
- A carb-heavy breakfast alone is not enough to cover a missed recovery day or set up threshold well without added protein and full on-bike fuel.

**Tomorrow's goal:**
Start Tuesday's endurance/torque ride from a recovered place: finish today's threshold support properly, get a complete dinner in tonight, and have a normal breakfast tomorrow instead of trying to catch up late.

**Next step:**
Add a real protein source this morning or immediately after the ride, take 75-90 g carbohydrate per hour if you do the threshold session, and get carbohydrate plus 25-30 g protein in soon after you finish.

Nutrition reply - 09:24 breakfast update

That rounds the morning out much better.

**Breakdown:**
This second meal gives you the protein the earlier pancakes were missing. Taken together, the morning now looks much more complete: strong carbohydrate availability, enough protein to support recovery, and a better overall balance before training.

**Macros:**
- Energy: ~274 kcal
- Carbohydrate: ~8 g
- Protein: ~22.8 g
- Fat: ~17.8 g
- Fiber: ~3 g

**Daily totals (estimated):**
- Energy: ~856 kcal
- Carbohydrate: ~116.5 g
- Protein: ~33.3 g
- Fat: ~30.3 g
- Fiber: ~8 g

**Feedback:**
This fixes the main protein gap from earlier. If the threshold ride is still ahead, keep carbohydrate available closer to the session, then get another carbohydrate plus protein feeding in soon after you finish.

Weekly self-assessment

Weekly check-in, Sid.

You've had a pretty compressed stretch here: back from Shanghai, a few days in Edmonton, then straight into Toronto and the first proper build sessions. Before I lock in the rest of this week, I want your read on how that all actually landed.

A few quick ones:

What felt best last week?

Where did you feel flat, off, or more limited than expected?

How is the back sitting right now, especially after the travel and the first harder work back?

Is there anything this week needs to account for on your side - fatigue, sleep, legs, fueling, schedule, or anything else?

If there's one thing you want changed, protected, or pushed this week, tell me that too.

/luca

Nutrition reply - 20:08 dinner

Good dinner. This gives you a useful carbohydrate and protein hit to close the day.

**Breakdown:**
The rice and orange sauce bring the main carbohydrate support, while the chicken gives a proper protein serving. The spinach salad helps the meal quality. The estimate can move depending on how much sauce, coating, and salad dressing was in there, but the overall read is functional for recovery.

**Macros:**
- Energy: ~717 kcal
- Carbohydrate: ~95.3 g
- Protein: ~32.3 g
- Fat: ~22.3 g
- Fiber: ~3 g

**Daily totals (estimated):**
- Energy: ~1,573 kcal
- Carbohydrate: ~211.8 g
- Protein: ~65.6 g
- Fat: ~52.6 g
- Fiber: ~11 g

**Feedback:**
This is your best protein hit of the day and it helps recovery. If today's threshold session happened in full, total energy and protein still look a bit light, so add a small dairy-free protein hit before bed if you are hungry, then start tomorrow with a normal breakfast.

/luca
/nutrition

Nutrition reply - 20:11 snack update

That snack fills in the day quite a bit.

**Breakdown:**
Trail mix, dates, and toast with peanut butter and honey add a meaningful carbohydrate and fat bump. The estimate is lower-confidence because the portions were not exact, but this moves the day from light to much more workable for training support.

**Macros:**
- Energy: ~506 kcal
- Carbohydrate: ~78.7 g
- Protein: ~12 g
- Fat: ~19.3 g
- Fiber: ~8 g

**Daily totals (estimated):**
- Energy: ~2,079 kcal
- Carbohydrate: ~290.5 g
- Protein: ~77.6 g
- Fat: ~71.9 g
- Fiber: ~19 g

**Feedback:**
Carbohydrate now looks much more appropriate for an active day. Protein is still only moderate, so if you are hungry before bed, make the next bite protein-forward rather than another carb snack. Otherwise, start tomorrow with a normal breakfast and keep the first meal protein anchored.

Athlete check-in - back/SI flare

This changes the week. Tomorrow is not a threshold day.

**Tomorrow:**
45-60 min easy spin only, flat or minimally rolling, Z1-low Z2, cadence 85-95 rpm. No threshold, no tempo, no torque, no hills. Stop immediately if shooting leg pain returns, SI pain increases, or the pain starts spreading again.

**Wednesday:**
No seated torque and no loaded lower-body strength. If tomorrow is clean, Wednesday is easy endurance plus unloaded reset work only. If tomorrow brings symptoms back, Wednesday becomes rest or a short walk.

**Medical flag:**
Because you had shooting pain down the leg, I want a physio or sports medicine assessment this week. Same-day medical assessment if you get numbness, tingling, weakness, bowel or bladder change, pain into both legs, severe rest pain, or pain waking you from sleep.

Send me one update tomorrow morning before riding: pain 0-10, and yes/no on any leg symptoms.

Need update rolling 7-day. Could edit relevant sections. Need read entire? Already. Use edit. Also maybe update May29/30 calendar? User only latest needs maybe near-term plan constraints. Should update rolling. Need maybe calendar May29/30 too? If current info affects, yes. But next immediate reply enough? Completion asks every requested? User didn't ask explicitly, but athlete-facing action. We should update at least rolling; maybe calendar for May29/30 can wait? But "when current or next day affected, update rolling-7-day". Need update rolling. Use edit exact for active watch and Tue/Wed/Fri/Sat. Need fresh read maybe enough (read earlier). Files may have changed? use read fresh relevant?

08:15 nutrition-daily-review cron ran. Review target: 2026-05-24 (planned recovery spin 1:00-1:15 plus short movement-quality and trunk reset after the first long ride of the rebuild; completion unconfirmed). Internal nutrition review written into ## Nutrition in this file (2026-05-25) under ### Status, ### Observations, ### Recommendations, ### Watch, and ### Carry-forward. Athlete-facing nutrition review body saved under ## Messages -> ### Nutrition review. Evidence gap noted inside the review: the canonical daily log for 2026-05-24 is missing and no standalone nutrition plan file was available for that date, so intake totals, hydration, and recovery-day completion remained unverified. Carry-forward goal: fuel May 25 like a real key session, add protein to the morning, use 75-90 g CHO/hr if riding, recover promptly after, and finish the day with a complete dinner. No athlete message sent. Contributors: luca, nutrition.
