2026-05-05 planning prompt

ROLE

You are a cycling high-performance coach-planner building a fresh training block for Sidney McGill. Design the plan, write the files, and keep everything internally consistent. Work from the most recent evidence, not from older planning assumptions.

ATHLETE SNAPSHOT (read the source files to confirm)

  • Sidney McGill, elite female cyclist. Primary: cyclocross. Secondary: XCO MTB, gravel.
  • Health: Hashimoto's thyroiditis (recovery-sensitive, elevated overtraining risk). Recent SI/back flare in late May with earlier radiating leg pain — now resolved and reported feeling good.
  • Location: Severn, ON through June 23. Travels June 24 to Edmonton then Cochrane, AB.
  • Near-term goal: Ghost of the Gravel, Saturday June 27, Cochrane AB. 118 km elite women, working target about 4:35:00. June 6–15 is the peak specificity block; the race taper follows from roughly June 16.
  • Planning reference date: June 5, 2026.

READ THESE FIRST

  • athlete/settings.yml (note: Coach Gunnar owns the live TrainingPeaks calendar; do NOT publish to live TP unless the operator explicitly asks. The calendar files you write are the internal authoritative plan that Sidney reviews.)
  • athlete/PROFILE.md
  • athlete/context/season-goals.md, race-calendar.md, travel-schedule.md, power-zones.md, current-focus.md
  • athlete/context/2026-05-27-to-2026-06-05-trainingpeaks-workouts.md (current fitness evidence)
  • athlete/rolling-7-day.md, athlete/rolling-3-week.md (to update)
  • A recent athlete/calendar/ file (e.g. 2026-06-04.md) for format reference — but SIMPLIFY per the feedback below.
  • skills/trainingpeaks-activity-creator/SKILL.md (conventions: Canadian English "Fuelling"; %FTP targets consistent with power-zones.md).

#1 PRIORITY — SIMPLIFY THE ON-BIKE WORKOUTS Direct athlete feedback: the previous workouts were too complicated to follow. Fix this.

  • On-bike sessions must be clean and largely self-explanatory. Cut the long multi-section format and the long constraint lists.
  • Each daily calendar workout should be short: a one-line objective, a plain-language workout, a simple structured-workout block (for TP), one or two fuelling lines, and only the one or two constraints that genuinely matter that day.
  • Do not bury the session in caveats. The title plus a couple of lines should tell Sidney what to do.

NOTES FROM COACH GUNNAR AND SIDNEY (apply these as hard constraints)

  • Rest-day logic: June 5 was a rest day, so Monday June 8 is NOT a rest day — training continues through the week. Monday June 15 becomes the rest day, and the normal Monday-rest pattern resumes from then on.
  • Back and SI feel good and should NOT restrict cycling. Cycling load can progress normally. Continue to protect the back and SI during gym and core work only.
  • Long-ride progression: one more 3:00–3:30 endurance ride before stepping to 4:00 rides, then one 5:00 ride before the end of the June 8–14 week (place the 5:00 as the Ghost simulation around Sat June 13). Note: she already completed a 3:42 / 108 km ride on June 4, so treat her as ready to progress — use one controlled 3:00–3:30, then a 4:00, then the 5:00 simulation.
  • Reintroduce running: short and easy, treadmill first to limit ankle risk, optionally moving to road if the ankle feels fine. Keep volume low, do not stack hard running on key bike days.
  • Gym with weights 2–3x per week, starting no earlier than Monday June 8. Submaximal, back/SI-protective until further notice.
  • Introduce some core work now; a larger core block follows starting July 1, so keep core introductory and conservative for now.
  • Everything serves being well prepared for Ghost of the Gravel on June 27.

CURRENT FITNESS EVIDENCE (from TrainingPeaks, May 25–June 5; confirm in the source file)

  • She executed a full load through this window and tolerated it: May 27 3:10/83.5 km, May 30 Openers, May 31 3:01, June 2 ZIPP (completed), June 3 2:05 + strength, June 4 3:42/108 km/161 TSS. Back held up. She is fit and progressing; the new block is a real Ghost-specific build into a taper, not a return-to-load.

KEEP THE GOOD HABITS FROM RECENT PLANNING

  • Race-day fuelling rehearsal on long and key days: "80 g/hr at race bottle concentration, drink mix + gel rotation, no solid bars." Keep this, but state it in one line.
  • Gravel-surface specificity on at least the key gravel/simulation days, with brief race-equipment rehearsal on the long simulation.

TASKS / DELIVERABLES

  1. Update the rolling plans:

    • athlete/rolling-7-day.md
    • athlete/rolling-3-week.md Reflect the new block, the corrected Monday-rest logic (June 8 trains, June 15 rests), the long-ride ladder, running and gym/core reintroduction, and the path from the June 6–15 peak block into the Ghost taper and race day June 27.
  2. Create individual daily workout files for June 6 through June 15 inclusive in athlete/calendar/ (2026-06-06.md … 2026-06-15.md). Use the simplified format described above. Each bike day should carry a clean structured workout and self-explanatory prescription. Sequence the long-ride ladder (one 3:00–3:30, then 4:00, then a 5:00 Ghost simulation ~June 13), place running sessions short/easy and off the key bike days, and include the gym/core sessions (2–3 per week, none before Mon June 8) as their own items on the relevant days. Location: Severn, ON.

  3. Create a summary .md in athlete/planning/ with the rationale and the day-by-day activity plan for June 6–15. Compact GFM, scannable, include a week-at-a-glance table and a short rationale for the block (long-ride progression, Ghost specificity, running and gym reintroduction, back/SI protection, taper hand-off).

  4. Create a separate gym strength and core plan .md in athlete/planning/ for the June 6–15 window. This is a clean, standalone document Sidney can hand to her gym/strength coach. Include: session days (2–3 per week, starting no earlier than Mon June 8), each exercise with sets/reps/load or RPE, the introductory core work, explicit back/SI protections and contraindications (submaximal, no spinal-loading to failure, stop on any radiating symptoms), and a one-line note that a larger core block begins July 1.

CONVENTIONS / GUARDRAILS

  • Canadian English in athlete-facing text ("Fuelling").
  • %FTP targets must be consistent with athlete/context/power-zones.md.
  • Do not publish to live TrainingPeaks; these are internal calendar files unless the operator explicitly requests a TP publish.
  • Keep fuelling realistic and gluten-free/dairy-free compliant where food is mentioned.
  • Hold Hashimoto's and recovery sensitivity in view: progress load but keep recovery days genuine, and avoid stacking running, gym, and key bike stress on the same day.
  • After writing, confirm the rolling files, the ten calendar files, and the two planning documents are mutually consistent (same long-ride dates, same rest day, same gym days).
