Activities
Planned
- Threshold progression: 30-minute warm-up, then 3×12 min at 95–100% FTP with 6 min easy between, total 2:00–2:20. Fallback: 2×15 min at 92–97% FTP if legs are not responding by end of warm-up. Morning check-in required before starting.
Completed
- Warm-up with building efforts, then 8×1 min at Zone 4 (340-415 W target). Athlete reports session was hard. Confirmed via athlete self-report at 18:19 MDT. Note: session deviated from planned threshold progression (3×12 min at 95-100% FTP); athlete executed high-intensity short efforts instead.## Coach Luca
Readiness check
- Classification: Amber
- Triggers: Yesterday's session was significantly modified (2hr endurance, no tempo, legs stiff throughout); back soreness carried forward from April 27 (location unconfirmed); no morning check-in received.
- Hashimoto's watch: no active flare indicators. Cumulative load from Victoria block still present. Monitoring for fatigue cascade.
- Session decision: Proceed with threshold progression but with explicit fallback (2x15 min at 92-97% FTP if legs are not responding at end of warm-up). Back soreness is a stop criterion if it aggravates in the aero position or becomes sharp.
- Specialist gate: Recovery materially implicated (Amber trigger, back soreness, cumulative fatigue). Nutrition materially implicated (fat gap from yesterday, threshold fueling guidance). Endurance materially implicated (session prescription, fallback structure, intensity framing).
- Weather source: Open-Meteo Edmonton (53.5461, -113.4938). WMO code 2 (partly cloudy). High 8.8°C / Low -3.8°C. No precipitation. Recommended outdoor window: mid-morning to early afternoon.

Summary
Status
Morning-after nutrition review for review target 2026-04-27 (bridge week day 2). Sidney completed a 2-hour outdoor endurance ride with no tempo intervals — legs stiff and tired throughout, correct execution of the built-in contingency. Daily totals: ~1,931 kcal, ~311 g carbohydrate, ~96 g protein, ~39 g fat. Carbohydrate was the day's clear strength — pre-ride loading was well-structured and total carbs reflect the training load appropriately for a glycogen-loading day ahead of today's threshold session. Protein came marginally short at ~96 g against a ~110–120 g target for a 2-hour training day. Fat at ~39 g was the largest gap on the day and warrants ongoing attention given the Hashimoto's context.
Observations
- Pre-ride carb loading was well-executed: breakfast at 10:11 (58 g carbs) followed by rice at 12:13 (17 g) and dates at 12:15 (30 g) totalled ~105 g carbs before rolling — right on target for a 2-hour endurance ride.
- Recovery smoothie at 15:18 (~54 minutes post-ride) hit the timing window and macro targets: 83.5 g carbs and 41 g protein from a single item. This was the best nutrition execution of the day.
- Total carbohydrate of ~311 g is strong for the training load and appropriately positions Sidney for today's threshold progression — glycogen stores should be in good shape.
- Protein at ~96 g fell marginally short of the ~110–120 g target. Distribution was across two effective windows (smoothie at 41 g + dinner at 31 g), with limited protein between 12:15 and 15:18 and again between 17:20 and 19:26. Close to adequate, but not fully recovered from the modified session.
- Fat at ~39 g is notably low for a training day. This is the main dietary gap. Adequate fat is relevant for hormonal synthesis and thyroid hormone support in an athlete with Hashimoto's. The day lacked a dedicated fat source beyond the smoothie's peanut butter and egg yolk from breakfast.
- Late-night dates (22:39, 10 units ~220 kcal, ~60 g carbs) were a smart pre-threshold glycogen top-up. Count is athlete-estimated; approximate but directionally correct.
Recommendations
- Today is the threshold progression (3×12 min at 95–100% FTP): start with 70–80 g carbs and 15–20 g protein at least 60–90 minutes before rolling. Standard smoothie or eggs with rice both work.
- Target 90 g carbs/hour once the intervals begin — this is a quality session and during-session fueling cannot be compromised.
- Post-session recovery meal within 45 minutes: carbs plus protein plus a deliberate fat source (peanut butter, almond butter, or avocado). This directly addresses yesterday's fat gap and supports overnight recovery for the next bridge session.
- Tomorrow's goal (April 28): Execute a full post-threshold recovery meal — carbs, protein, and a fat source in the same sitting. Getting fat intake above ~60 g today is the main daily nutrition target given the Hashimoto's flag.
Watch
- Fat intake has been low across the bridge week so far. With Hashimoto's, chronic low fat affects sex hormone production, anti-inflammatory balance, and T4→T3 conversion efficiency. If the pattern continues through the China travel period, it needs to be named directly.
- Protein distribution is improving (three contributing windows on April 27 vs two on April 26), but the evening continues to carry the majority of daily protein. A small mid-afternoon protein snack (~15–20 g) on training days would materially improve recovery synthesis efficiency.
- Energy at ~1,931 kcal is on the moderate-low end for a 2-hour training day. With a 16-hour drive and Victoria block fatigue in the system, the net energy position over the last three days (April 25 drive, April 26 rest, April 27 modified ride) needs to stay positive through the China build. No acute concern, but total energy should not trend lower.

Morning plan
**Readiness:** Amber - yesterday's session was significantly modified (2hr endurance, no tempo, legs stiff throughout); back soreness carried forward; no morning check-in received.
**Today's plan:**
Threshold progression, 2:00-2:20 total. Warm up 30 min progressive, then 3x12 min at 95-100% FTP (247-260 W), with 6 min easy between each. If legs are not responding at the end of the warm-up, fall back to 2x15 min at 92-97% FTP - that is still a quality session. Do not try to compensate for yesterday by adding intensity.
If back tightens in the aero position or becomes sharp at any point, stop and convert to an easy spin.
**Fueling:**
Start with 70-80 g carbs and 15-20 g protein at least 60 min before rolling. Target 90 g carbs per hour during the interval work. Recovery meal within 45 min of finishing: carbs, protein, and a fat source together. Fat intake was low yesterday; address it today.
**Weather:**
Edmonton ⛅
8.8°C / -3.8°C, partly cloudy
Cold this morning, near freezing until about 10:00, then warming to 9°C by mid-afternoon. No rain. Mid-morning or early afternoon is the better window for outdoor threshold work - dress in layers if going out before 10:00.
**Monitor:**
Back soreness - if it aggravates in the aero position or becomes sharp at any point, stop.

Nutrition review
Yesterday's intake matched the training well where it counts. Pre-ride carbs were on target, the recovery smoothie landed in the right window with strong macros, and total carbohydrate at 311 g positions you well for today's threshold session. The structural instincts were good.
**What went well:**
- Pre-ride loading was properly sequenced — breakfast plus rice and date top-ups put \~105 g carbs in before you rolled, which is exactly right for a 2-hour aerobic effort.
- Recovery smoothie at 15:18 hit the post-ride timing window and delivered 83.5 g carbs and 41 g protein in one hit. That's the most important nutrition decision of the day and you executed it well.
- Total carbohydrate at \~311 g reflects the day's training load and supports today's threshold work — glycogen should be in good shape.
**What needs work:**
- Protein finished at \~96 g — close but marginally short of the \~110–120 g target for a 2-hour training day. The two strong protein windows (smoothie + dinner) did most of the work; a small protein addition between 17:00 and 19:00 would close this gap on future training days.
- Fat was low at \~39 g for the day. This is the main gap worth addressing — adequate fat matters for hormonal health and thyroid function, especially with Hashimoto's in the picture. Adding a deliberate fat source to one meal each day (almond butter, peanut butter, egg yolk, avocado) makes a real difference over time.
**Tomorrow's goal:**
After today's threshold session, get a full recovery meal in within 45 minutes — carbs, protein, and something with meaningful fat in the same sitting. Chicken and rice works; add peanut butter, almond butter, or half an avocado to it.
**Next step:**
For today: 70–80 g carbs and 15–20 g protein at least 60–90 minutes before the intervals start. Use the standard smoothie format or eggs with rice. Target 90 g carbs per hour once you are in the threshold work.

Evening summary
The threshold progression got replaced today with 8x1 min at Zone 4. Confirmed significant modification from the plan, but a genuine high-intensity effort. Zone 4 short intervals hit a different system than 3x12 min sustained threshold: more short-burst capacity, less oxidative endurance. The effort was real.
Note: sustained threshold work has been displaced two days running now. Not an alarm, but relevant context for the back half of the bridge.
**Recovery:**
Post-session smoothie was well-timed. Dinner tonight is the important meal: 30-40 g protein alongside carbs and a fat source in the same sitting. Fat has been short of target again today; this meal is the fix. Get to bed early if you can.
**Tomorrow:**
Endurance with seated torque, 1:45-2:00. Steady Z2 throughout with 4x6 min at low cadence (55-65 rpm), 70-78% FTP. This is a real workload day, not an easy spin. If today left more residual fatigue than expected, drop to 2-3 torque reps but complete the full ride.
**Monitor:**
Back status from today. If it caused any issues during the session, note it before you start tomorrow.
