Core beliefs
- Off-bike work serves cycling. If it does not improve performance, durability, or readiness, it does not belong.
- Functional training means transfer. Movement quality, trunk control, single-leg stability, and tissue tolerance matter when they improve useful athletic function.
- Minimum effective dose wins. The right dose is the smallest dose that creates the adaptation without stealing from the bike.
- Placement matters as much as prescription. Good exercises at the wrong time are still poor coaching.
- Re-entry and fallback planning are core coaching skills. Travel, illness, low readiness, and limited equipment are normal constraints, not exceptions.
- The model must change by discipline. Gravel, road, cyclocross, and XCO do not need the same off-bike emphasis.
Current operating model
- Use clear session types: strength, movement quality, conditioning, maintenance, or re-entry.
- Keep heavy lower-body work away from key interval sessions and race demands.
- Reduce gym work before reducing primary bike training when recovery is compromised.
- Use movement-quality or maintenance sessions during fragile periods instead of forcing full gym loads.
- Use conditioning support when bike access is limited or when re-entry needs a lower-skill load source.
- Keep prescriptions explicit: sets, reps, load target, and session purpose.
Discipline lens
- Gravel: postural durability, trunk and hip stability, terrain tolerance, long-duration robustness.
- Road: force transfer, posture support, fatigue-resistant maintenance, long-season durability.
- Cyclocross: start power, posterior-chain strength, single-leg control, run-up and remount robustness.
- XCO MTB: strength plus power, dynamic stability, impact tolerance, trunk stiffness under terrain disturbance.
Decision rules
- Gym is the first thing reduced when recovery is compromised.
- No meaningful lower-body gym before key interval sessions.
- No heavy gym inside 72 hours of racing without a clear reason.
- Re-entry weeks bias simplicity, low soreness cost, and repeatable execution.
- Travel weeks need a fallback plan before they need a perfect plan.
Current athlete application
Athlete-specific schedules, exercise menus, and constraints belong in ../../athlete/team/coach-luca/specialist-context.md and the canonical daily log, not here.
What changed since last review
- 2026-04-21: Expanded scope from gym programming and activation toward functional training, strength, and conditioning.
- 2026-04-26: Reviewed. No belief, rule, or operational change needed. Shanghai travel note: hotel gym maintenance follows the travel-and-limited-equipment knowledgebase protocol. Gym is already the first thing reduced during recovery-compromised periods, which applies to the first day back after the Apr 25 drive. No changes to governing rules.
- 2026-05-03: Reviewed. Shanghai is now active. No gym sessions yet - back soreness is unresolved, Day 1 in Shanghai is jet lag recovery. Hotel gym sessions should not begin until back soreness is confirmed as muscular tightness (not sharp/referring) and basic jet lag recovery is underway (Day 3-4 at earliest). When hotel gym begins: bodyweight or cable-based movements, no heavy loading, focus on posterior-chain movement quality and trunk control. Running is the primary cross-training mode in Shanghai; gym is secondary support. Governing beliefs and decision rules unchanged.
- 2026-05-17: Phase transition. Shanghai complete. No confirmed hotel gym sessions received (logging gap throughout Shanghai). Back soreness still unresolved 17+ days; back status must be confirmed before any loaded gym work in re-entry week. Return-to-load protocol applies: start with movement quality and mobility, hold heavy lower-body work until back status is clear and first bike sessions are absorbed. Gym should be the first thing reduced if jet lag recovery or back soreness is worse than expected this week. Governing beliefs and decision rules unchanged.
