Nutrition skill second validation, 2026-04-13
Objective
Run a second, harder validation against a more ambiguous nutrition case after the first end-to-end pass succeeded.
This pass also verifies that the new concrete example was added to the handoff contract reference.
Improvement implemented before this test
Added a concrete sample handoff payload to:
skills/nutrition-analysis/references/data-contract.md
Result:
- future runs now have both field names and a modeled example
- this closes the main follow-up from the first validation pass
Harder test case
Why this is a stronger test
Compared with the first test case, this item is harder because:
- it is a mixed vegetable dish rather than a straightforward protein-and-starch plate
- oil and dressing amount are not directly measurable
- there is no product label anchoring the estimate
- dietary compatibility depends on ingredient assumptions rather than strong label evidence
- the coaching value depends heavily on uncertainty handling, not just macro estimation
Source checks
Persistence source present
Pass.
Observed in the canonical daily log:
Received: 2026-04-12 19:46 MDTConsumed: assumed 2026-04-12 19:46 MDT- item description present
- media path present
- macro estimate present
- assumptions present
- practical implication present
- status marked complete
Media file present
Pass.
Verified file exists:
athlete/logs/media/2026-04-12/03-sidney-cabbage-mushroom-green-onion-salad.jpg
Validation against nutrition-intake
Intake classification
Pass.
This item classifies as:
- new intake item
- photo-backed mixed dish
- no timing override present
- no return-media request
- no summary request
Persistence expectations
Pass.
The item already satisfies the new persistence model:
- canonical daily-log entry exists
- entry is under
## Nutrition - media path is preserved
- consumed timing default behavior is explicit
- the item is handled through canonical storage rather than a staging-only path
Timing and heading rules
Pass.
Observed behavior matches the new persistence standard:
- heading uses
### 19:46 - received time is explicit
- consumed time is clearly defaulted, not invented as athlete-confirmed fact
Validation against nutrition-analysis
Can a stronger uncertainty-aware handoff be built?
Pass.
This case validates the handoff skill better than the first pass because the handoff has to preserve what is unknown, not just summarize what is obvious.
Sample handoff payload
- athlete_username: sidney
- received_at: 2026-04-12 19:46 MDT
- consumed_at: assumed 2026-04-12 19:46 MDT
- effective_entry_date: 2026-04-12
- source_batch_id: 2026-04-12-19:46-single-item
- media_paths:
- /athlete/logs/media/2026-04-12/03-sidney-cabbage-mushroom-green-onion-salad.jpg
- detected_items:
- shredded cabbage slaw
- green onion
- red cabbage
- mushrooms
- light dressing or vinaigrette
- athlete_stated_items:
- none beyond the photo-derived dish description
- meal_role: side dish, provisional
- session_context: same-day dinner period after a 3:00 endurance ride
- day_type: endurance-ride day
- dietary_compatibility: uncertain
- edamam_path: named-food lookup only for decomposable components if needed; dressing remains heuristic unless clarified
- open_assumptions:
- portion treated as a small side bowl, not a large entrée salad
- dressing treated as light and oil-based rather than creamy
- no nuts, cheese, seeds, or croutons assumed because none are visible
- open_questions:
- dressing composition unknown
- exact oil quantity unknown
- hidden dairy or gluten cannot be excluded from dressing without clarification
Evidence hierarchy check
Pass.
Evidence stack in this case is appropriately weaker than the dinner test:
- photo evidence, moderate
- athlete-stated specifics, limited
- label-visible data, none
- Edamam, optional support only for decomposable components
- major uncertainty remains in dressing composition and quantity
This is exactly the kind of case where the handoff needs to preserve uncertainty instead of pretending confidence.
Uncertainty handling check
Strong pass.
This test confirms the new handoff model works where it matters most:
dietary_compatibilityshould remainuncertain- dressing should not be treated as fully known
- no false claim of dairy-free or gluten-free support should be made
- unresolved uncertainty is preserved cleanly in
open_questions
Validation against nutrition-reply
Can a compliant athlete-facing reply still be produced?
Pass.
Dry-run reply body
This looks like a light vegetable side rather than a meaningful recovery feeding.
**Breakdown:**
You likely got some micronutrient and fiber value here, but this contributes very little carbohydrate, protein, or total energy on its own. The dressing may lift the calories slightly, but it still reads as an accompaniment, not a substantial post-ride intake.
**Macros:**
- Energy: ~70-95 kcal
- Carbohydrate: ~6-9 g
- Protein: ~1-2 g
- Fat: ~5-7 g
**Daily totals (estimated):**
- Energy: ~1536-1761 kcal
- Carbohydrate: ~142-164.5 g
- Protein: ~45.25-52.5 g
- Fat: ~57-68 g
**Feedback:**
Count this as a side, not as recovery support. After a long endurance ride, the bigger need is still carbohydrate plus a clearer protein source.
Reply compliance check
Pass.
The dry-run reply:
- contains no internal workflow language
- keeps the uncertainty in the interpretation without overloading the athlete
- does not overclaim the dressing composition
- uses the required section structure cleanly
Handoff-reference improvement check
Pass.
The new example added to skills/nutrition-analysis/references/data-contract.md materially improves usability because:
- it gives a concrete model for field ordering
- it shows how to encode assumptions concisely
- it shows how to keep uncertainty explicit without bloating the payload
Result
Overall result: pass
This second validation is stronger than the first because it confirms the new skill split also works on an ambiguous mixed dish where uncertainty management matters more than simple item identification.
Final read after two validations
The current skill architecture is in a good working state.
Confirmed strengths:
- persistence rules are cleanly separated from specialist handoff logic
- specialist handoff can preserve uncertainty without re-expanding
AGENTS.md - athlete-facing reply logic remains separate and clean
- the new concrete example improves reproducibility of future handoffs
Remaining recommended next step
The next strongest validation would be:
- a true multi-photo batch with a later timing correction attached to the batch
That would test the hardest branch in nutrition-intake, the follow-up-context attachment model.
